Hey Pals,
Happy 2019!
Gold Leaf Literary has been having a great 2019 so far, and we have enjoyed lots of reading during these long, cold evenings. It’s been a while since you’ve heard from us, so we thought we’d fill you in on the work we’ve been up to.
First, we’d like to give a shout out to our pals, The Flatiron Writers, celebrating their 25th anniversary this year! The anniversary will be commemorated with a documentary, filmed by the wonderfully talented documentarist, Maryedith Burrell. You might see two goofy Gold Leafers in that documentary, chatting about TFW and the amazing work they do.
Last Fall we had the honor to teach a class for The Flatiron Writers on pitching literary agents. We also partnered with the Great Smokies Writing Program through UNC-A for the second time to teach about the literary ecosystem. In September we attended the SIBA conference in Tampa, reconnecting with our bookselling pals and meeting new ones.
We are psyched to share that Alan Gratz’s forthcoming book, Allies, drops in October. Alan continues to roam the globe presenting to students from California and Vermont to Switzerland and Hong Kong.
Jo Hackl, who’s book Smack Dab in the Middle of Maybe was a SIBA Okra Pick and an Indie Next List Pick, continues to travel and teach about Smack Dab and about bringing nature into the classroom. The book is a SIBA TRIO selection and you can see the art and hear the music that was inspired by this wonderful middle-grade novel. It comes out in paperback this Summer.
Gold Leaf has had the honor of being hired by several independent publishers, new and old, to help publicize their bodies of work. We are proud to be working with Southern Fried Karma, Pisgah Press, Lioness Press, and Haywire Books. Check them out!
We are working with Asheville debut novelist Erica Witsell, whose novel Give has received love from Ron Rash and Amy Willoughby-Burle. Ron says, “Give is a striking, often unflinching, depiction of a doomed marriage and its enduring consequences. Erica Witsell is a very talented writer and her debut should garner a wide and appreciative audience.” Give is due in June from BQB Publishing--keep your eyes peeled!
Also from BQB Publishing is author Mark Paul Smith, whose book Rock and Roll Voodoo comes this Spring. We are excited to bring more attention to this book about music-making in The Big Easy.
And for all you middle-grade book fans, we are proud to be collaborating with NC author Todd Gallicano to help promote his Sam London series. Join us as we wander into the U.S. Department of Mythical Wildlife!
Gold Leaf helped local historian and spiritual teacher, Randy Bell, launch his book Conversations with America: Confronting the Divisive Challenges of Our Time. We look forward to working more with Randy on his forthcoming book as well. We’re also helping educator and priest, Bill Mills, to help launch his book Losing My Religion.
We will continue to assist our friends Denise Kiernan and Joe D’Agnese, as well as advise the fab local thriller writer Michael Winstead, writer/editor Christopher Brookhouse, historian and mystery writer Jack Snyder, writers-with-works-in-progress Jenny Knapp and Scott Oxford, and John Ross. In 2018, we had the pleasure of collaborating with Amy Willoughby-Burle, Andrew Lawler, and Megan Shepherd. It was truly an honor to work with these writers.
Thank you for being part of our literary community! Until next time!
